Has Connecticut Avenue seemed more congested lately? Do the drivers who stop to turn left on Westport Avenue frustrate you? Got caught by a traffic jam caused by a train on Cross Street?

Now's your chance to vent your frustration. If you're a frequent Norwalk driver, tell us your pick for the town's most congested road in the poll to the side. The poll is for in-town roads only, so Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway have been left off the list. If you don't see your choice, tell us in the comments below.

Then tell us why you made your choice. Share your frustrations in the comments section below, or email them to nchapman@dailyvoice.com. You can also send in complaints via Twitter (@NorwalkDV) or on our Facebook page.

Barnstorm:

All these roads are bad, and I agree the new traffic lights could have been programmed better by one of the Maritime Center's meerkats. As bad as CT Avenue, East & Main Avenue are, virtually all of Sono is impassible every afternoon. That includes Washington St, North Main St, Martin Luther King Blvd, West Ave (up to I-95), as well as the feeder roads Flax Hill and Fairfield Ave.
In the event of an emergency where an expedient evacuation is necessary, a whole lot of folks are never going to make it out of Norwalk.

Broad River:

Nancy, I like polls. You give your opinion without having to explain yourself in great detail. Yet you can pipe-in with a comment if you want to. More Polls Please.

Diane C2:

CT Ave., East Ave @ I-95, Cross and Main, East and Westport Ave, Rte 7 Connector and Main,
lights are timed so poorly and lack of opposing left turns means gridlock at almost all major intersections.....

tross61:

CT Ave is the worse but I'm noticing very heavy traffic on Cross street between 5-6pm on weekdays even when there is no train causing the delay.

egendron:

I agree CT Ave by exit 14 is the worst but I can't stand the turn from New Canaan Ave onto Main Street. With the train tracks and the Dunkin Donuts right there, I avoid that turn like the plague.

MichaelWard:

Anywhere Hal put a new traffic light. They were synchronized by a herd of kittens

Diane C2:

They almost had to have been timed so poorly on purpose - otherwise we'd know they have absolutely NO competence.
The left turn signal from East Ave to East Wall allows more than 11 cars through, and there is no intersection beyond it to clear. Conversely, the left turn signs from East Ave on to I-95 South allows 3-4 cars through, and routinely gridlocks East Ave as far back as St. Thomas Church!!!
Brilliant.

Debora:

CT Avenue is bad, but nothing is worse than East Avenue when 95 is blocked for some reason. It turns into a parking lot out there.

Deanna4:

I live off Main Avenue and always go to CT Ave thru back roads. I can get all the way to Home Depot by back roads... lots less stress than taking CT Ave.

RML:

Connecticut Ave. near exit 14, especially on the weekends. They need to "x" out that intersection right off exit 14 (south bound) like they have done in Stamford with the white markings on the road. Don't block the box.

Paige:

One of the things that I think is being worked on right now is Exit 14 southbound where it empties onto Connecticut Avenue.

ridgenorwalk@aol.com:

Ct Ave. is really bad ,so what is happening is verybody that needs to get to Wal-mart or Home depot or even Shop-Rite well they are looking at the back roads through all of our neighborhoods. There is more traffic on Stuart Ave. now than ever before, I have lived there for thirty years so I know. The traffic is out of hand now and developers want to build more. I have heard that Lowes is coming to town out on CT Ave. so that means more traffic in our neighborhood (O wait I forgot there will be no impact on traffic) for that matter there is no impact on anything.

NwlkCityZen:

@ridgenorwalk@aol.com

I also live on one of the back roads that is overrun with speeding cars trying to avoid CT Ave. People are just so thrilled to find a different route, but forget that there are homes, kids, pets living on those side roads.

The city planners need to take in the whole picture when planning Lowes and other big box stores. People have to get to these places somehow, and if the traffic is this bad BEFORE the store, well, I can't even imagine!

Diane C2:

We have no "city planners".

Broad River:

When I want to go to The Home Depot, I go to Fairfield. I can't stand the entire Connecticut Ave Strip! I also don't like the parking arrangement at the Norwalk store, not to ,mention the 20 or so handicapped spaces for those handicap people doing a weekend project. Yes there should be handicap parking, that's not the issue, the reserved spaces were mostly empty. The open lot is so much better for me at the Fairfield store.

Paige:

Broad,

I think the number of handicapped spaces is determined by Planning and Zoning and subject to the Connecticut General Statutes.

And I agree with you about the parking garage in Norwalk. I don't like it either.

Broad River:

I know the number of spaces is detremined by the total number available. It's just that they are 90% unused day after day, when actual parking is at a premium there.

Paige:

I've noticed that, too, on the rare occasions I've been there. I don't think there is anything that can be done about it.

gardenmom:

Connecticut Avenue. I will do almost anything to avoid it. It is awful, after work and on weekends.

lwitherspoon:

CT Avenue, the stretch from exit 14 to Shop Rite, especially on Saturday morning.

Paige:

I agree.

I'm trying to remember to turn by the Community Health Center on to Cedar Street, then take a left on the street that runs behind the Silver Star and come out on Scribner by Best Buy. That gets me past the worse of it.

lwitherspoon:

That's a fantastic suggestion, thanks! Hope I remember that and nobody else reading this does. ;)

What I think is interesting about that stretch of CT Ave is that I always DREAD going there. Yet when I am forced to, it's actually not as bad as I was expecting, with the exception of Saturday mornings.

The comment above about striping the intersection at exit 14 to encourage people not to block the box is a very interesting idea.

Does anybody have ideas about how that stretch of CT Ave could be improved? Might part of the problem be related to the extremely short off ramp from exit 14 on 95 south? Much of the time there's a backup on the right lane of 95 south due to lack of room on the off ramp for exiting vehicles.

Broad River:

I rarely go to anything on CT.Av. but when I must I take the connector and then get off exit 13 and come back. Northbound U.S.1 dosen't seem as bad, traffic-wise. Going back home I take Richards Av.out to New Canaan Av. I know I don't save time but as long as I'm moving I'm happy :-)

Paige:

From what I understand, the State is working on improving the entire strip from R.E.I. down to Fairfield Avenue just past the new fire station. 95 will be widened, and the Cedar Street Bridge is being redone. The last batch of plans that I saw had the oddly aligned intersection at Cedar and Connecticut re-aligned the lanes. I'm not sure how they intend to improve this, but the State, who actually control both 95 & Connecticut Avenue (a.k.a US Route 1) knows, in its, uhm, infinite wisdom. We shall see....
