NORWALK, Conn. - An off-duty Norwalk fire captain was driving past a home as it caught fire Monday and helped the residents escape without injury.
Norwalk fire Capt. Red Auberbach alerted the occupants of the two-family home at 14 Gregory Boulevard in East Norwalk . Heavy smoke was gushing from a second-floor porch when fire crews arrived shortly after 12:30 p.m., Deputy Chief Gino Gatto said.
Flames spread to the entire porch, Gatto said.
A Norwalk firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The residents of the home are being relocated by the American Red Cross.
