Obama Swooping Into Greenwich To Raise Senate Campaign Cash

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Frank Farricker didn't get an invite to President Barack Obama's fundraising stop Tuesday evening at a private reception at a home in a wealthy, exclusive area of backcountry Greenwich.

However, the chairman of the Greenwich Town Committee, who also doubles as chairman of the state's lottery corporation, said he's happy the president is swinging through town.

"We all like the president, and we are happy that he is coming to town," Farricker said. "But it is a private fundraiser."

Susan Cohen, a Stamford resident who was visiting Greenwich on Tuesday afternoon, said she was hoping for a safe visit for the president.

"I'm a great fan of his," Cohen said as she enjoyed a coffee at Starbucks on East Putnam Avenue. "I hope he's kept safe."

She also hopes that Obama will be able to persuade voters to support Democratic candidates in the November elections, especially to keep the Democratic majority in the Senate. If Republicans get the majority, she believes "nothing will get done."

Obama is expected to arrive in town in a style fitting the commander in chief, according to Hearst Connecticut Media

Obama will travel via the Marine One helicopter, with the landing scheduled for the Greenwich Polo Club, Hearst Connecticut Media reported here. Obama is traveling from New York City, where he is attending an earlier fundraiser and event, according to his schedule.

The price to attend is as much as $32,600 per person at the event, which will be held at the home of  Richard and Ellen Schapps Richman located in the exclusive Conyer Farms area of Greenwich.

The money will go to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is in a tough fight to keep the Democrats in the majority in the U.S. Senate.

But the money won't be spent on campaigns in Connecticut: The fundraiser will benefit the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., are not up for re-election but are expected to attend.

The Richmans also hosted a private fundraiser for Obama in 2010.

The president's Marine One helicopter is built at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford.
