The son, named Erik Lars Tobler, was born in Norwalk Hospital to Kirsten and Greg Tobler and entered the world at 12:58 a.m. He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces. Erik is the Toblers first child, and the mother and baby were doing well Tuesday.

And the little guy appeared to have been in a bit of a hurry.

The Toblers knew they were going to have a boy, but their due date was Jan. 24, according to Greg Tobler. “It was a real surprise,” he said. “This was the last thing we were expecting to be doing today because her due date was still a few weeks away. But I guess he just didn’t want to wait.”

Kirsten Tobler, who teaches sixth-grade English at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, was asleep early Monday afternoon when her water broke, she said, and she began labor at about 3 p.m.

“We were supposed to have a New Year’s Eve get-together with friends Monday night, but obviously that all changed,” she said as she cradled Erik in her arms while sitting in the hospital’s maternity ward. She said she’s feeding Erik about every three hours.

Kirsten’s students at St. Luke’s threw her a party just before the Christmas break, and Greg said one her colleagues, Troy Haynie, who is also an EMT at Norwalk Hospital, was the “emergency backup driver” in case Kirsten went into labor at school or if Greg wasn’t immediately available.

“I’m kind of glad Erik came when he did, because I can’t imagine how big he’d have been if he came a few weeks later,” Greg said of the 20-inch baby.

Kirsten said she might have preferred at least a few more days to prepare.

“We thought we’d have at least a few more days to set up his room, but it’s about ready,” she said. “Just needs a few extra touches.”
