The purpose of the project is to provide safety and traffic operational improvements by providing opposing left-turn lanes on U.S. Route 1 at its intersection with Stuart Avenue.
Currently, U.S. Route 1 at this intersection is comprised of two travel lanes in each direction. It is proposed to widen both sides of U.S. Route 1 and provide exclusive left-turn lanes in each direction to address high crash occurrences involving turning-type movements at the intersection.
Additional improvements include the construction of new concrete sidewalks within the project limits; sidewalk ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; and crosswalks at all corners of the intersection. A new traffic signal will also be installed.
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2016 based on the availability of funding and will cost approximately $2.8 million.
