While most people don’t like to think about worst-case scenarios, giving them their proper consideration ultimately can offer peace of mind. As the Atlantic hurricane season approaches, along with several active storms, Labor Day weekend provided extra time to get prepared.
There are three simple things residents can do prepare and plenty of free resources and apps to help.
- Make a kit: Prepare a 72-hour kit with at least a three-day supply of food and water. Personalize your kit by having things each family member may need. If you already have a kit, strengthen your preparedness by maintaining the supplies and replace anything that has expired. FEMA’s website provides detailed information on what may be most important to you and your family. Another recommended website to help residents prepare is at this link, which also offers great activities for kids.
- Have a Plan: Create a family emergency plan, so your family knows how to communicate and can quickly reunite during an emergency. Make ICE (in case of emergency) cards for children. Create your own or visit this link. Make sure to include a meeting place outside the home in case of a fire as well as outside the neighborhood in case you can’t get home. Practice your plan at least once a year, including your family fire drill.
- Be Informed: Learn about different disasters that can happen in this area and be aware of active storms, watches and warnings that affect the area. Make sure your contact information is updated in the City’s Code Red notification service, especially if you’ve added cell/ text numbers or email addresses.
