NORWALK, Conn. – A prominent Norwalk Republican will take on state Sen. Bob Duff, D-Norwalk, in this fall's election, according to a statement from the Republican Town Committee.

Norwalk Board of Education Chairman Jack Chiaramonte will be nominated to run for the 25th state Senate seat Monday night in the first day of the Republican Town Committee convention, with Norwalk and Darien Republicans in attendance at the Norwalk Inn, according to Art Scialabba, committee chairman.

The active week for Republicans will continue as incumbent Republican legislators will be nominated for re-election Wednesday. On Friday, the Republican Town Committee will send 17 delegates and two super delegates to Hartford, where they will select the Republican candidate for the 4th Congressional District as well as U.S. Senate.

State Rep. Larry Cafero Jr. is running for re-election to the 142nd House District and will be nominated at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Norwalk Inn. State Rep. Terrie Wood, R-141st District, will be nominated at a convention in Darien. State Rep. Gail Lavielle, R-143rd, will be nominated at a convention in Wilton.

Republican Common Councilman Joanne Romano is expected to be nominated at 6:30 p.m. May 22 at the Norwalk Inn. Incumbent Registrar of Voters Karen Doyle Lyons and justices of the peace will also be nominated.

You think that your insult of Jack Chiaramonte, a public servant doing a thankless job, makes Chiaramonte look bad. The reality is that your insulting comment simply makes YOU look bad.

Tim T:

Actually what looks bad are the posts that you are being paid the make. I know you will deny this but no one could be so stupid as to post the nonsense that you do without being paid..But maybe you are that stupid to do it for free. Oh and I am not insulting you, I am just making an observation.

Tim T:

Somebody should tell fat boy Chiaramonte that he needs to call Jenny.

Mr Nelson:

Chiaramonte should worry a little less about the buffet and worry a little more about the 4 million the BOE is missing..

I struggle to name something significant that Bob Duff has done for Norwalk, despite his many years in the legislature. He does seem to be very good at showing up for photo ops and issuing press releases when a private for-profit Norwalk business gets taxpayer money to hire one person.

I haven't seen any response to Chiaramonte's criticism of Duff not delivering for Norwalk in terms of a fairer ECS funding formula. Duff is in the same party as the governor and has been in the legislature for many years, so why can't he deliver more funds to Norwalk?

Serving on the school board is a thankless role because if you make cuts, all the parents hate you, but if you spend more money, then all the seniors hate you. Nonetheless Chiaramonte does it anyway. He should get some credit for that. Clearly the $4 million (not $10 million as you have claimed) funding shortfall is at least partly Chiaramonte's responsibility but there still hasn't been a clear explanation of where the failures in financial oversight occurred, what warning signs were missed, and who missed them. I can forgive Chiaramonte for not spotting something that was buried in badly-organized financials a lot easier than I can forgive Sen. Duff for not securing more funds in Hartford for Norwalk's Public Schools. In any event, the position he's running for is for State Representative, not Controller.

OLD TIMER:

$4 million short this year with $ 5.9 projected to be short next year adds up to pretty close to $10 million under Chiaramonte's chairmanship. Forgive me for not having more exact figures, the BOE doesn't seem be to have them, either. I know he isn't running for comptroller, but I would prefer to see our State Senators be able to count and do simple arithmetic.

As a practical matter, I expect all that fiscal mismanagement on his watch will be a real problem in his campaign. His skills, or the lack thereof, as a public speaker, will not be much help. either. There is no end to the list of voters he can find ways to offend. Just because some people make it look easy, doesn't mean it will be easy for Chiaramonte.

My understanding is that the $4 million was a surprise, and it's entirely fair to assign some responsibility to Jack Chiaramonte and the school board for that. We are still waiting for a full explanation of what happened. He may have been getting bad information from district employees in the finance office.

The other $5.9 million in cuts, I thought, is due to the BET appropriating less for education than the Superintendent requested. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that. If I'm not wrong, then it's not reasonable to blame Chiaramonte for the additional $5.9 million in cuts.

I agree with you that Chiaramonte will probably lose to Bob Duff, who has collected a full-time salary from taxpayers for many years, while devoting a huge amount of time to self-promotion and photo ops. I think it's interesting that after my initial comment about struggling to name something significant that Bob Duff has done for Norwalk, the only thing anybody responded with were fat jokes and criticisms of Jack Chiaramonte. I guess I'm not the only one who struggles to name something significant that Bob Duff has done for Norwalk.

OLD TIMER:

Struggles ?
Why do I find it hard to believe you even put any effort at all into finding something nice to say about a Democratic state senator ?
You and I make no effort to hide what team we support, it is too late now to suggest any different. If you ask moccia, a live-long republican, he will tell you good things about Senator Duff. That battle to get the formula for state aid to school systems changed has been going on for a very long time. Chiaramonte meant well to go to Hartford and speak in favor of more money for Norwalk, but, I expect his diplomancy offended more than were persuaded. Senator Duff's style is less bombast and a great deal more effective. He reaches across the aisle very effectively and teams up with Larry Cafero in Norwalk's interest. Just because he didn't jump on Chiaramonte's bandwagon when Chiaramonte thought he should does not mean they weren't supporting the same cause. When, and if, if happens and the formula is changed, bet on Duff and Cafero getting it done.

Whats funny? We NEED to stop electing the same old liberals year after year expecting things to get better. Our legislature has been stacked with Democrats for awhile now & the result is one of the highest taxed state in the nation running a deficit. We are commiting financial suicide by not recognizing failed policy when its stareing us in our faces. Maybe the BOE fiasco wouldnt have been such a big deal if we werent already giving money away like it grows on trees. If we could get responsible leadership in Harford maybe we can reduce the state tax burden & keep more of our money available for us instead of having to beg for it back.

OLD TIMER:

Something about scraping the bottom of the barrel comes to mind, but maybe nobody else was dumb enough to take the nomination. I expect he means well, but after the BOE money fiasco, he better find somebody who can count to handle his campaign money. I figured there was no way he would get any nomination until the $10 million dollar shortfall is fixed.
