The tradition began in 2013, when teens on the South Side of Chicago asked classmates to honor a murdered friend by wearing orange. That act of remembrance has grown into a national movement.

According to the national organizers, the color orange symbolizes the value of human life, since hunters wear orange in the woods to protect themselves and signal their presence. Orange has become the symbol of gun safety.

“Wearing orange is not only an act of remembrance; it symbolizes our pledge as individuals and community members to work for firearm safety in our city, our state, and our nation. I hope you will join me in that pledge," Rilling said.
