Norwalk Man Gets 57 Months In Federal Prison For Possession Of Stolen Gun

NORWALK, Conn. -- A 33-year-old Norwalk man was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for possessing a stolen firearm, according to U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly.

Jacob Keels was also sentenced Thursday by Chief U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall in New Haven to three years of supervised release after his prison term.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in the early hours of Oct. 17, 2013, Keels attempted to flee from Norwalk police officers in South Norwalk.

At the time of his arrest, police said officers on patrol saw two men in a parking lot on Raymond Street about 3 a.m. The area is known as “an open-air drug market,” so the officer drove into the lot to investigate, police said. That is when Keels fled.

His clothing matched the description of a suspect from a drug sales complaint earlier in the morning, and the officer followed Keels to South Main Street and called for backup, police said.

As Keels was being apprehended , a .22-caliber revolver dropped from his waistband. The firearm had been reported stolen in Bethel, and he did not have a permit to carry it.

His criminal history includes multiple felony narcotics convictions. He has been detained since his arrest.  On Feb. 5, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a stolen firearm.

This matter was investigated by the Norwalk Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Vanessa Richards.
