Norwalk Honors Veterans on Memorial Day

NORWALK, Conn. – Thank you signs dotted East Norwalk on Monday morning as crowds lined either side of East Avenue to watch veterans, children, Norwalk's public servants and patriotic citizens of every stripe march in the annual Memorial Day parade.

"This is fabulous, one of the best ever," said Diane Cece. "We're so proud. We're thankful, and we're thinking of our veterans today."

Cece was co-chairman of the "Thank You" sign drive. Northrop Grumman provided 2,000 signs for the parade. Cece said there might be more next year.

It took nearly two hours for the parade to make its way from Veterans Park to Norwalk's Town Green. It was "cool," said Reggie Lewis, who walked to Calf Pasture Beach afterward.

A resident of Van Zant Street, who would only identify herself as Henrietta, said she grew up in Norwalk and remembered when the parade marched down Wall Street to East Avenue. She has enjoyed five or six parades since moving to Van Zant. "I like it for the veterans," she said. "I go for that. Iraqi vets, that's the reason I came out."
