NORWALK, Conn. It was a "sad day" for Norwalk as police investigated the apparent drowning of 19-year-old Allan Nunez, Norwalk High School athletic director Wayne Mones said. Mones and former head football coach Pete Tucci described the young man as "determined."
Nunez, who graduated in June, drowned in Candlewood Lake after reportedly slipping out of an inner tube. The New Milford police called it a "horrible, horrible tragedy" and "a very unfortunate accident" but were still investigating.
"Any time you lose a young man, it's a devastating blow," Tucci said. "Allan's transformation from when he was a freshman to the time he was a senior was one of the best things I've ever seen as a coach." Nunez gave off a tough persona, Tucci said, but underneath was "one of the nicest young men I've ever met."
"He came in kind of unbridled, but through his hard work and his parents' hard work, he was able to channel that energy through sports in the right way," Tucci said. "He had a heart of gold and was very compassionate. He wanted to help other people as much as he was helped throughout his life."
Mones said he would always remember when Nunez made a bold prediction came true on the Norwalk High track team. "He competed in the 12-pound shot put this past spring against McMahon High School and told me he had to throw it a certain distance," Mones said. "He got up there and he threw it exactly that far. He was that kind of determined and competitive kid."
Nunez slipped out of an inner tube while swimming in the Dike Point section of Candlewood Lake in New Milford. The accident happened just before 6 p.m. Tuesday. Friends and paramedics attempted to revive Nunez but were unsuccessful. No lifeguards were stationed at that part of the lake.
Nunez was a 255-pound defensive lineman for the Norwalk High School football team and was a member of the track and field team. According to Nunez's Facebook page he was originally from Honduras and planned to attend Norwalk Community College in the fall. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
