Norwalk Dems Nominate Jaeger, Others

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk's Democrats worked toward a new era with their nominating convention Monday night, puting together a slate of candidates for the fall election. "This is a moment of change for Norwalk," said Norwalk Democratic Town Committee Chairman Marc Bradley at the Hilton Garden Inn. "We can't sit on the sidelines anymore. There's been a lot of infighting in our Democratic party over the years; no one will argue with that. But this is 2011 - we have a real chance to come together, to elect a Democratic mayor, to elect city council people, board of education people, and other members of the sixth taxing district, from sheriff down to treasurer, who are going to represent us in the best interests of Norwalk, not the best interests of some group of folks that have known each other for 30 years and pat each other on the backs."

Democrats expressed pleasure at the amount of people in attendance: more than 100 people, many of whom stood in the back of the room, watching.

A highlight was when Common Councilman David Jaeger was nominated to be town clerk.

"This is a very exciting night and I see already that the office of town clerk is going to have a ratcheted, spirited campaign," said State Sen. Bob Duff. "One gets struck by lightning, the other one is expecting their first baby."

Donna King nominated Jaegar, citing his "managerial experience in the public and private sectors" as well as his government experience. Andy Garfunkel, current town clerk and candidate for mayor, rose to second Jaeger's nomination, saying he was well suited to the job. "If I don't get struck by lightning," Jaeger quipped.

"I'm really excited to do this, it's a great opportunity to help Andy in his campaign," Jaegar said. "...I know we have a great slate of candidates selected tonight and it's going to be on to victory in the fall."

Democrats put forward six names for five at-large seats on the Common Council, and then polled members to see which would get the nominations. Tony Ditrio was the sixth vote getter.
