NORWALK, Conn. Who's ahead in the mayoral race? Democratic challenger Andy Garfunkel can point to one poll he thinks is accurate: the number of people who contribute money to the campaigns.
"Those are votes," Garfunkel said recently, referring to the idea that people who give money are likely to go to the polls. If so, Garfunkel may be ahead: From June through October, a total of 110 Norwalkers gave money to his campaign. In that time, 60 Norwalkers gave money to the campaign to re-elect Republican Mayor Richard Moccia.
The Moccia and Garfunkel campaigns raised similar amounts during the period, but Republican contributions were generally more generous. Seven people gave $1,000 to Moccia; two people gave $1,000 to Garfunkel.
Six people gave $500 to Moccia; 10 gave $500 to Garfunkel. Moccia had one $425 contribution, one $350 contribution, seven $250 contributions, one $225 contribution, five $150 contributions and 34 $100 contributions. Garfunkel had one $300 contribution, 10 $250 contributions, one $225 contribution, five $200 contributions, two $150 contributions, 36 $100 contributions and 34 $100 contributions.
Forty-one out-of-towners gave money to the Garfunkel campaign. Twenty-five non-Norwalkers contributed to the Moccia campaign.
Five committees donated to Garfunkel. One committee donated to Moccia.
