Norwalk City Council OKs $2 Million Plan To Find New Site For Mosque

NORWALK, Conn. — The battle over a plan to build a mosque on Fillow Street came to an end Tuesday night as the Norwalk City Council approved a $2 million plan to find the Al Madany Islamic Center find a new site, according to The Hour.

This resolved a 2-year old lawsuit by Al Madany against the city after the city’s Zoning Commission rejected plans for a 27,000-square-foot building on the 1.5-acre property at 127 Fillow St. in West Norwalk.

Many in the residential neighborhood had said the proposed mosque was too large for the site.

As part of the agreement:

Norwalk will pay $307,500 for litigation costs and $925,000 for damages to Al Madany.
Norwalk will buy the property for $585,000.
The city will work with mosque officials to find a new site and pay up to $215,000 for development costs.
