Norwalk Beach Stickers Will Be Good One More Year

Good news: The City of Norwalk is extending last year's beach stickers. As long as your  sticker from last year is intact, you don't even have to go to City Hall to get a new one.

Director of Parks and Recreation Mike Mocciae says if you have a sticker dated to expire in 2011, hold on to it. It's good for another year. In fact, you can now think of it as a Resident Sticker, because that is what the city is calling it.

It will give Norwalk residents access to beaches, Norwalk parks and the city's transfer station. And the extension is a harbinger of things to come, as the city is working toward allowing residents to get their stickers online through the city's website. If all goes according to plan, that will happen by next January.

The new registration system will be integrated with the city's motor vehicle grand list and tax collector's database, so if you own a motor vehicle registered in Norwalk you'll be able to get a Resident Pass online. The city is looking into visual scanning technology at Calf Pasture Beach; if it works it will automatically allow authorized vehicles to enter. It is hoped this will speed things up on busy summer weekends.

If you've already removed your old beach sticker or if you need a new "Resident Pass," you'll have to go through the same old routine in the Parks and Recreation Department at City Hall. The good news is it will be much quicker, as there will be less people looking for a sticker.

Parks and Rec employees will be able to focus their attention on park services, Mocciae said, and there will be a budget savings when the sticker process is streamlined via the city's website.

"It is a win-win announcement that I am very happy to be a part of," Mocciae said.

What do you think about the proposed automated entry at Calf Pasture Beach? Is Big Brother watching?
