The center, which serves children in Norwalk, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Weston, and Westport, will use part of the grant money to purchase an Electronic Medical Records system. That way, it will comply with new federal regulations that require healthcare providers to transition to EMRs by 2015, according to a press release.

The funding will also enable the Child Guidance Center to purchase new vehicles needed to transport children enrolled in the Center’s Extended Day Treatment Program, according to the release.

"This innovative program was developed to remediate severe and persistent behavioral problems in children 5 to 12 years old so they can remain in their homes – thus avoiding a breakup of the family unit," said a press release.

“Thousands of children in Norwalk, Westport, Wilton and other nearby towns suffer from a mental illness, but have difficulty getting the treatment they need. We are their safety net,” said Stuart Greenbaum, executive director of the Child Guidance Center of Mid-Fairfield County. “Like most nonprofits, our resources are limited and we struggle every day to keep up with the growing demand for the affordable child mental health services we provide. We are grateful to the governor and the Connecticut legislature for stepping up to the plate and recognizing that the mental health services we provide are essential to the health and well-being of our communities.”

State Sen. Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) was on hand to congratulate the Child Guidance Center of Mid-Fairfield County on the grant.

“Nothing is more important to the future of Connecticut than the mental and physical well-being of our children. The Child Guidance Center works with thousands of young people across Fairfield County every year," Duff said. "These funds will help them to reach even more kids, and to do so more efficiently than ever before. I am proud to have such a great organization in our community and to be able to help them continue their great work."
