No Bones About It: No Littering in Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. — A Bridgeport man threw chicken skins onto a Norwalk street Sunday afternoon, an act of littering that offended a Norwalk police officer and earned the man a ticket, according to Sgt Lisa Cotto. Although the man said no bones were in the refuse, and there shouldn't be a problem, Lt. Shawn Wong Won issued the man a citation for the infraction and his "ridiculous shenanigans."

Wong Won, who deals with quality of life issues as a community policing officer, was parked on Ely Avenue near Lexington Avenue on a patrol at 12:55 p.m. He saw the 52-year-old Bridgeport man throw the fried chicken skins onto the road from a parked car, Cotto said. Two trash cans were located four feet away.

The man argued with Wong Won and told the officer he was being prejudiced. Wong Won told him that he was "offended by his ridiculous shenanigans and should have discarded it appropriately in the first place," Cotto said.

Cotto did not say how much the man was fined.

lwitherspoon:

The only way littering will stop is with aggressive enforcement, BRAVO to Lt. Won for taking the trouble to issue the ticket.

Another highly offensive practice is people who litter empty glass bottles, often out the windows of moving vehicles. The benefit is that that if stopped, they won't have an open container of alcohol in their vehicle, or maybe they just enjoy the sound of breaking glass. The bottles shatter on sidewalks or the street and create hazards for the rest of us and for our dogs.

What can law-abiding citizens do to help stop the disgusting practice of littering?

Norwalk is a mess. People toss things from their cars and even pedestrians disregard the law. Things that should be put in trash cans go on the sidewalks and roads. There is always something in front of my house to pick up. Littering is as enforceable as distracted while driving, which is another all to often an ignored law.

Does this guy not realize that Norwalk is NOT his garbage can???? Why is he so "chicken" as to not have waited to throw out his trash in HIS own town??

horsegirlk:

I am so tired of picking up soda can rings and garbage while I am walking my dog, while constantly telling her to "DROP" the disgusting chicken bones that people throw all over the street. What is up with that? And people who DON'T pick up after their dogs on the street and in the dog park should ALSO be ticketed. How about the slobs that buy lottery tickets and phone cards at the convenience stores and throw the losing tickets and trash on the ground (when there is a trash can a foot away)? Or the pigs that park on the street and then clean out their cars onto my LAWN. Go for it. Ticket them all.
