Teen Accused in Norwalk Jogger's Death Faces Adult Charges

NORWALK, Conn. – The 16-year-old New Canaan driver accused in the March death of a Norwalk jogger will return to Norwalk Superior Court on June 22.

The girl, who is facing criminal charges as an adult, was to appear in court on Thursday morning, but the matter was rescheduled, according to the Norwalk Court Clerk’s Office.

Norwalk police have charged the New Canaan resident with negligent homicide by motor vehicle, failure to drive in an established lane and distracted driving. Norwalk police said the girl was driving a 2001 Toyota 4Runner on March 24 when she struck 44-year-old runner Kenneth Dorsey at about 9:31 a.m. in the area of 229 New Canaan Ave. A police affidavit says the girl was using her iPhone while driving at the time of the incident.

I never understood why not to print a name regarding something serious like this. Its tragic but she killed a man. On the flip side IF we need to treat minors differently in the legal system then thats what we should do consistently. If this young girl cant vote or anything else requiring adulthood and we separate crimes into adult/juvenile categories then thats where the compassion should come in. In cases of outright violent crime its understandable, but this is clearly a case of a young person making a tragically irresponsible mistake. Put her name in the paper, but treat here like what she is in the eyes of the law, a juvenile offender.

Pretty incomplete reporting. Anyone think to ask why she is being tried as an adult?

TDN did the right thing by not printing the girl's name. I saw the girl's name printed in another local publication and was shocked and outraged. Maybe the reason is that she's being tried as an adult. Whatever the case, printing her name was really inappropriate. Yes she should face the legal ramifications of her actions, so that there will be justice for the victim and a cautionary tale for all others - but there needs to be some compassion and recognition for the fact that she is only 16 years old and will be haunted by these events for the rest of her life.

I have a dirty taste in my mouth (lol) but I actually agree with lwitherspoon on this
