Farren's former wife, Mary Margaret Farren, addressed the court at the sentencing hearing, saying his attack on her was not an act of passion, but rather the acts of a man who had tried to control her for years, thehour.com reported.

Judge Richard Comerford called J. Michael Farren's actions "disgraceful" as he handed down the sentence, thehour.com said.

Farren attacked his wife and beat her with a metal flashlight on Jan. 6, 2010, in their New Canaan mansion two days after she served him with divorce papers.

In addition to his prison sentence, Farren will be subject to an additional five years of special parole and will have a lifetime restraining order preventing him from contacting his ex-wife, thehour.com reported.

Mary Farren was awarded $28.6 million in damages for the attack in a civil trial in December.
