A theft of about $3,800 in copper was reported to Norwalk police at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. By 2 p.m., the copper had been recovered and three men had been arrested.
Frederick Davis, 43, of Fairfield; Michael Pappas, 46, of 12 Avenue B; and Jamila Pereira, 26, of 14 Oakwood Road, were each charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, conspiracy and possession of a controlled substance, less than 4 ounces of marijuana. Bond was set at $25,000.
The copper was stolen from Hocon Gas, 35 Rockland Road, sometime Wednesday night or Thursday morning, police say. The chain link fence and the lock from a gate to a storage area had been cut. The thieves took only the 1-1/2-inch and 3/8-inch yellow coated copper, wrapped in yellow coils.
Police contacted Lajoie's scrap yard and told them to look out for the copper. Less than four hours later, at about 2:18 p.m., police got a phone call that someone had come in with the copper in their van. While police were doing an inventory of the van, they found glassine envelopes of suspected marijuana, which tested positive.
Police discovered there were warrants out to arrest Pappas, who was allegedly driving the van, and Davis. Pappas was charged three times with failure to appear. Davis was taken to Fairfield to be arrested because the Fairfield Police Department had the warrant.
