FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – A total of 252 M8 railroad cars have now been delivered to Metro-North’s New Haven train yard for use on the New Haven Line, the MTA announced on its website.

Of the total M8 cars, 242 have been accepted for service and 10 have been under inspection and testing by Kawasaki Rail Car Inc.

Earlier this year, Metro-North’s M8 count reached 216 railroad cars in April and 186 in January.

The new M8 trains represent 54 percent of total weekday service on the New Haven Line, 78.9 percent of Saturday service and 79.7 percent of Sunday service, according to the MTA.  As of April, the New Haven Line was operating more M8 cars than old equipment.

Metro-North ordered 380 M8 rail cars from Kawasaki Rail Car in 2006 for use on the New Haven Line. Of the 380 original order, the first 38 were built in Kobe, Japan, and the remaining 342 are being built at Kawasaki's plant in Lincoln, Neb.
