Metal Bolt Found To Have Killed I-95 Passenger

GREENWICH, Conn. -- A thick metal bolt that crashed through a car's windshield on I-95 near Greenwich last week was the culprit in the death of the vehicle's passenger, state police confirmed Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Saturday at 12:34 p.m. on I-95 southbound between exits 5 and 4 in Greenwich. The Ford Escape was traveling southbound in the left lane when the metal object broke through the windshield and hit the victim, Sara Betancourt, 40, of 250 Northridge Road in Waterbury.

Though the incident still remains under investigation, police are confident the bolt came from a vehicle traveling northbound on I-95. The metal bolt is a one-inch diameter, threaded bolt, approximately 3-1/2 inches long with a 2-1/4 inch washer welded to it. The item is believed to be a locking pin, or “dog’s ear” from a one-ton dump truck.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident -- or who knows the whereabouts of the vehicle that may have lost the bolt -- to contact State Police in Bridgeport, Troop G at (203) 696-2500.
