FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn., -- A 38-year-old Danbury man was apprehended Saturday afternoon after he assaulted a Connecticut state trooper in Danbury, then fled in his car, prompting a two-state chase that ended when he ran into a swamp off Route 7 in Danbury near Ridgefield, according to officials and multiple reports.
Marc Debenigno, 38, was passed out in the driver’s seat of an automobile parked in an I-84 commuter lot in Danbury on Saturday morning when approached by Connecticut troopers, according to state officials and reports. After seeing drug paraphernalia and drugs in the vehicle, troopers awoke Debenigno, who struggled while being apprehended.
A trooper attempting to taser Debenigno missed, and Debenigno was able to flee in his car, leading to a chase into Putnam County and then back into Connecticut.
Debenigno was finally apprehended shortly after 3 p.m. when, after re-entering Connecticut from backroads in Putnam County, he hit a guardrail on southbound Route 7 on the Danbury/Ridgefield border before running into a large swamp near West Starrs Plain Road, where he was apprehended and taken to Danbury Hospital.
"It's over," Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton posted on Twitter. "The great escape of 2015 has been concluded."
The Danbury, Ridgefield and Redding police departments and Danbury Fire Department aided in the pursuit, which included K9 dogs, bloodhounds and a helicopter and boat, state police said.
Debenigno is expected to face numerous charges, including assault on a police officer and engaging in pursuit.
According to a March 26 Daily Voice report, Debenigno was charged by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department with violating probation.
Debenigno was in Putnam County, which violated the terms of his Connecticut probation, police said.
De Benigno had been previously convicted of third-degree burglary, first-degree larceny, possession of narcotics, illegal possession of a weapon and credit card theft. The terms of his probation required he not leave the state of Connecticut without written permission, police said.
