Locals Applaud the Death of Osama bin Laden

Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaida and the man responsible for the terror attacks that claimed more than 3,000 lives on Sept. 11, 2001, has been killed. President Obama announced late Sunday that a United States-led military operation killed bin Laden, and his body was in the custody of U.S. forces.

Local reaction to bin Laden's death was swift. "We needed some good news for a change, very timely for the 10th anniversary of 9/11!!" MSC reader Linda J. Lyons said on The Daily Stamford's Facebook page. Betsy Peyreigne, on The Daily Weston's Facebook page, said, "There is no family-friendly way to express my feelings at this moment."

Darien Selectman David Bayne said on his Twitter, "Life is precious. It's a shame bin Laden did not cherish the lives of others as he did his own."

New Canaan resident Dutch Doscher on his Twitter said, "Thank you Special Ops, you deserve a ticker tape parade through downtown Manhattan."

The Daily Norwalk reader Judy Marroquin said, "My reaction??? I'm glad they got him finally!! The 9/11 victims can finally rest in peace, the families of these victims, they can finally have some kind of closure. You can run, but you can't hide forever, not from The USA!!!!"

Reader Lindy Kline-Geertz was also happy to hear the news. "So many have given their lives for this. ..... THANK YOU to our troops!!!" she said on The Daily Norwalk's Facebook page.

Casey Meskers, an Easton resident, wrote: "Glad he is gone. He has caused a lot of pain," on The Daily Easton's Facebook page .

Fans at the New York Mets-Philadelphia Phillies game in Philadelphia on Sunday night began chanting "USA! USA! USA!" And people gathered outside of the White House in Washington, D.C., late Sunday waved flags, sang songs and celebrated the news of the terrorist's death.

U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman , D-Conn. and a Stamford resident, said the world had scored a victory in the war on terror. "Americans will wake up tomorrow in a safer, better and more just world."
