Light Shines Again From Norwalk Lighthouse

NORWALK, Conn. – For many years the Sheffield Island lighthouse guided sailors away from the rocks around the island and in Norwalk Harbor. And the Norwalk Seaport Association has opened the visiting season.

Starting on Saturday and running through Monday, the ferry will be going back and forth between Norwalk Harbor and Sheffield Island at 11 a.m., 2 and 3:30 p.m. and every weekend after that through September. On June 25, the ferry will start offering daily trips.

The lighthouse tower is still undergoing restoration and will be closed until completion late this summer, but the rest of the island and lighthouse will remain open.

The restoration began with a $250,000 grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development , including a solar power energy system that was installed in October. And now, thanks to the solar energy system, the light is shining again after more than 100 years of darkness.

“We’ve had numerous improvements completed on Sheffield Island since our guests saw us last year,” said Norwalk Seaport Association President Irene Dixon. “For months, our dedicated volunteers and contractors have been tirelessly restoring the lighthouse so we can provide an exceptional experience for our guests – truly a must-see event for the entire family.”

Upcoming activities on the island this summer include:

  • Clambakes on the island every Thursday, starting June 28.
  • Pirates will invade the island July 14-15 and again July 21-22.
  • Haunted Lighthouse on Aug. 11-12.
  • Sunset Harbor Tours on Friday evenings, starting June 29.
  • Bird Watching Tours on June 16, 17, 30 and July 1, 28, 29.

The ferry will depart from the Sheffield Island Dock at Washington and North Water streets in Norwalk. For ticket prices, event details and ferry schedule, visit the association website .
