Lieberman Warns of 9/11 Anniversary Threat

After the death of Osama bin Laden , plans for an attack on U.S. railways were reportedly found in his Pakistani hideout. U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., warned residents to be concerned about a possible attack on Sept. 11 or holidays.

“All of our systems need to be on high alert, and all of our citizens need to be on high alert,” Lieberman said of the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 . Lieberman, a Stamford resident, is chairman of the Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Attacking U.S. railways is not a new threat, Lieberman said, referring to attacks on trains in other countries. Although the plans found in bin Laden’s hideout definitely referenced a railway attack on U.S. soil, specific locations were not given, he said. This is a concern to Fairfield County residents because of the Metro-North Railroad and our proximity to New York and its train system, he said.

“Right now, airplanes are more secure,” Lieberman said.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority has increased its security since the death of bin Laden by adding police officers, K-9 units, bag checks and heavy weapons units, a statement said. The MTA also has encouraged all passengers to speak up if they see anything unusual.

"This is another reminder that our transit system remains a top target, and we must always remain vigilant. While there is no specific threat, we remain at high alert in coordination with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners,” Marjorie Anders, a spokeswoman for the MTA , said in an email.

Lieberman was in Stamford on Friday as the keynote speaker at the Fairfield County Bar Association’s “Law Day 2011 Luncheon” at the Stamford Marriot Hotel and Spa .
