The power outages Wednesday afternoon led Norwalk police to close the Exit 14 off-ramp on southbound I-95 to Connecticut Avenue due to nonworking traffic lights. The exit ramp remained closed through the afternoon rush hour and was reopened late Wednesday night.

The restoration work was complicated by an early evening storm that added more power outages in the city due to downed trees and power lines, CL&P said.

The number of outages was reduced to 23 by 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, CL&P said, with full restoration expected before Thursday morning.

Original story: NORWALK, Conn. -- More than a thousand Norwalk residents lost power Wednesday afternoon after two wires burned, according to Connecticut Light & Power.

A total of 1,369 customers were still without power as of 5 p.m., CL&P said. That number increased to 1,479 by 6:45 p.m. after heavy rain moved through the area, CL&P said. The number of outages was reduced to just 23 by 10:30 p.m.

The utility company is still trying to determine what caused the wires to burn, according to CL&P spokesman Kevin Witkos.

The fire was not caused by any car accidents or downed trees, Witkos said. Crews are on the scene working to repair the damage, and power is estimated to be returned to customers by 7:30 p.m.

As a result of the power outage, the off-ramp at Exit 14 southbound is closed. Exit 14 is the off-ramp for Route 1/Connecticut Avenue.

Many traffic lights along Route 1/Connecticut Avenue are out due to the power outage. Motorists are encouraged to avoid Route 1 in the area and seek an alternate route.
