WILTON, Conn. -- Joseph A. Silva Jr. of Orleans, Mass., died Aug. 14 after a brief illness.
Born in Hartford on Jan. 19, 1938, Silva attended schools in East Hartford and later earned a B.S. in elementary education from the University of Bridgeport. He returned to UB to earn a master's in education and administration. He taught in Norwalk for 35 years and served as a principal of an elementary school for four years before retiring.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virginia "Ginnie" Ellis Silva; two sons, Michael Silva and his wife, Clair, of Bethel, and Christopher Silva and his wife, Christine, of Wilton; and five grandchildren, Taylor, Nicholas, Max, Quin and Josie.
Silva was especially fond of spending time with his family. He took pride in his yard and enjoyed working outside. Clamming was one of his favorite pastimes, and he served one term on the Orleans Shellfish Commission.
The arrangements for a service celebrating Silva's life will be announced at a later date.
