James Michael "Jim" Scarpone, 67, a decorated Vietnam veteran, died Thursday at the Honey Hill Care Center. Born in Norwalk on Jan. 3, 1943, he was awarded the Purple Heart and other military medals.
Scarpone lived locally all his life and worked as an auto mechanic for Herbert Fuel in Darien. He was a former member of the Pastime and Laurel Athletic Clubs. He loved animals and enjoyed bowling, softball, crosswords, playing cards, and science.
Scarpone is survived by three daughters, Wendi A. Scott of Norwalk, Laurie A. Houseknecht and her husband Kent, and Michelle L. Johnson and her husband Bill of Bridgeport; siblings Lucy Austin of Hanford, Calif., Pasquale Scarpone of Norwalk, R. Anthony Scarpone of Trumbull, Daniel Scarpone and Angela Vigilio of Norwalk; and four grandchildren, friend Doris, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Emidio Scarpone.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Ave. Full military burial honors will follow outside the church after the Mass. Burial will be private.
