NORWALK, Conn. James "Kuta" Shaw, Jr., 21, a 2008 Brien McMahon High School graduate, died Friday, Dec. 23, when he was hit by two cars.
Shaw was voted Prom King in 2008, was captain of his lacrosse team and was an outstanding player on the basketball and football teams. He was described as a fierce player who won numerous awards, honors and recognition for good sportsmanship. Shaw went on to attend Bridgeton Academy and hoped to become a sports industry icon.
The son of Sandra Snider and James Shaw Sr., he was the second oldest of nine siblings: Elliot Snider, Jainya Kave, Jamie Shaw, Hope Shaw, Faith Shaw, Amariana Shaw, Christiana Shaw, Yasmine Shaw and Yamina Shaw. Survivors also include his grandparents Mary Snider, James Franklin Shaw and the Rev. Carrenia Shaw.
His family presents the following quotes, all chosen by Shaw:
"Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring." Oscar Wilde
"Anger is a short madness. It's said to be a poison which will purge into your mind and destroy your good nature." Unknown
"A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control." Proverb 29:11 of the New Testament
"Life is not lost by dying; life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, in all the thousand small uncaring ways." Stephen Vincent Benet
"Life is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." William Shakespeare, "Macbeth"
"Give me a minute, I'm good. Give me an hour, I'm great. Give me six months, I'm unbeatable." Col. John 'Hannibal' Smith, "The A Team"
"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." Old English Proverb
The family says Shaw picked out these quotes because of what they meant in his life. Each one symbolized what he believed in and helped him put life in perspective, even if just for a moment.
