Immigration Officials Detain Man Charged With Sex Assault At Danbury Court

DANBURY, Conn. — A man was taken into custody by federal immigration officials Wednesday while he was in the Danbury courthouse for a pretrial hearing on a sex assault charge, according to the News-Times. 

Julio Virgilio Paida-Morquencho, 22, a citizen of Ecuador, was taken into custody in Danbury by federal immigration agents in late March.

Danbury resident Jonathan Rubio, 23, was charged with first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor after he gave alcohol to a 15-year-old girl and raped her, prosecutors told the News-Times. 

State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky confirmed that U.S. Department of Homeland Security officers took Rubio into custody, the News-Time said.

Another Danbury resident, Julio Virgilio Paida-Morquencho, 22, a citizen of Ecuador, was taken into custody March 27 by federal immigration officials. He was slated to be sentenced that day on sexual assault charges.

A video showing his arrest on Liberty Street has gone viral on the Facebook page of the Tribuna newspaper.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Paida was an ICE fugitive for failing to leave the U.S. as ordered by a federal immigration judge in 2013. 

The Trump administration has promised a crackdown on undocumented immigrants who commit crimes.
