Laima Filipauskaite-Abbas had no idea the southbound I-95 entrance on West Avenue would be closed Monday afternoon, according to her post on The Daily Norwalk Facebook page. "It was a nasty surprise yesterday," she said.
The closing of the I-95 and Route 7 ramps was an expected part of construction work there, which will lead to entrances dedicated solely to each highway. But Norwalk Police and Norwalk Fire were surprised by the news , according to Lt. Paul Vinett, the overnight shift supervisor. Vinnet said he had checked with the police communications department and there had been no word from the state that the closing would happen Monday.
The city of Norwalk posted an announcement about the closure today, one day after the announcement was dated. "The ramps will remain closed for approximately eight weeks," the announcement says. Signs on West Avenue say the entrances will be closed until July 14.
"This is crazy," Maureen Casey Carroll said on The Daily Norwalk's Facebook page. "How are people in SoNo going to get to work? Traffic around Norwalk is going to be a mess!"
Vinett said there had been a traffic jam Monday evening and Facebook commenter Maribeth Wisniewski Becker agreed. "It was total gridlock yesterday around 5:45," she said. "Took me 25 minutes to get from Barcelona to the Y. Might help to have someone manually controlling the lights to keep the traffic flowing."
