NORWALK, Conn. Guests at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk were treated to high-flying acrobats during the 13th Annual Red Apple Awards.
The Cirque de la Mer, themed The Rite of Spring, event raised more than $730,000 for the aquarium's environmental education program for students in the tri-state area.
A part of the dinner was dedicated to honoring Richard and Wendy Hokin, of Darien, and Sandy and Ann Davies, of Norwalk, for their gifts and assistance as members of the board of trustees. The Hokins gave the aquarium $1.1 million for its FINtastic RefurbFISHment.
With cuts to educational budgets and the rising price of gasoline, schools are finding it increasingly difficult to afford field trips, said aquarium President Jennifer Herring. The money raised by the 430 guests at the Red Apple Fund dinner will help to assist schools in going to the museum through transportation costs, admissions, movies and the educational programs.
The Maritime Aquariums Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment, helps make the aquariums marine-science and environmental-education programs available to students and teachers regardless of their ability to pay.
