Tahir Farid, 22, of Hamden, had pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute, and the distribution of, oxycodone.

U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny gave also gave Farid three years of supervised release, Daly said. Part of the requirements for Farid's release is that he perform 120 hours of community service by talking to school-age children about the dangers of opioids.

According to court documents and statements made in court, last Jan. 3, a 20-year-old man paid Farid $900 for 30 oxycodone pills.

He then took some of the pills, as well as Xanax and other substances. Two days later, he was found passed out at a friend’s house in Weston.

Nearly a year later, he remains unresponsive, has no brain activity and is being cared for in a nursing home, Daly said.

The investigation revealed that, prior to the victim’s overdose, Ryan Looney, also of Hamden, had supplied Farid with oxycodone pills that he then sold to the victim, Daly said.

Farid was arrested in February and pleaded guilty in April, Daly said. Looney also pleaded guilty to the possession of, and intent to distribute, oxycondone. He is to be sentenced on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The investigation and prosecution, Daly said, is part of an ongoing statewide initiative targeting narcotics dealers who distribute heroin, Fentanyl or opioids that kill or seriously injured users.

The case was handled by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Haven Tactical Diversion Squad, U.S. Marshals Service, Weston Police Department and Monroe Police Department. The Tactical Diversion Squad includes members from the New Haven, Hamden, Greenwich, Shelton, Bristol, Vernon, Wilton, Milford, Monroe, Fairfield and Manchester Police Departments, and the Connecticut State Police.

It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert M. Spector.
