GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich Hospital is honoring nurse Caitriona Perna with the November Quality Award for saving a woman's life while she was off-duty at a school event for her daughter.

At the school function, Perna realized a woman lost consciousness and began to convulse, suddenly and without warning. Perna immediately offered to help.

Perna called for an automated external defibrillator and with the help of two others, started CPR. When the AED arrived, she performed defibrillation. The woman, who had suffered a sudden abnormal rhythm of the heart called ventricular arrhythmia, was rushed to the hospital for surgery for a pacemaker.

If it hadn’t been for Perna’s quick thinking, training and skills, together with knowing the importance of timely intervention with an AED, the woman may not have recovered. She is fine today and called to personally thank the nurse.

Greenwich Hospital honors Caitriona Parna with the November Quality Award for her vigilant act of kindness and for her service.
