'Frankenstorm' To Roll Over Norwalk

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Nicknamed “Frankenstorm,” Hurricane Sandy’s path has the storm hitting the coast by Tuesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rains before Halloween.

At 5 p.m. Thursday, Hurricane Sandy was a Category 2 hurricane, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which means winds could be as strong as 110 mph. It was unclear how strong the storm will be when it reaches New England.

The probability of the storm hitting our area by Tuesday has increased over the last 24 hours, the National Weather Service said. Projections will continue to become clearer as the storm moves north, the weather service said.

The storm will have “the potential for heavy rainfall, high winds, coastal flooding and beach erosion,” the service said in its forecast. And those on the coast should be aware that due to a full moon Sunday, tides are likely to be higher than normal, which could cause the coastal flooding to be worsened.

Pinpointing the specific impact is still difficult for forecasters because a low pressure system moving east from the middle of the country will interact with Hurricane Sandy and change the storm.

“Some models predict that Sandy may move onshore somewhere in New England early next week," Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a statement Thursday morning.

"Although we are not certain the storm will impact the state, we need to be prepared. That means everyone, especially the state’s utility companies.”

Connecticut Light & Power has a video on YouTube to help residents create backup plans in case of power outages. The power company and the state are urging residents to prepare early.
