FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Hurricane Sandy could dump eight inches of rain on the region and send winds gusting more than 75 mph by the time it reaches Fairfield County beginning late Sunday night, according to projections from and the National Weather Service.

Serious coastal flooding is expected, and officials in Norwalk, Stamford, Westport, Fairfield, Greenwich and Darien have issued warnings and told residents in flood-prone areas to either evacuate or be prepared for evacuations.

Additionally, Connecticut’s utility companies are preparing for extensive power outages that could affect half to 70 percent of the state’s households. The outages could last for several days in some areas of the state.

For southern Fairfield County, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning and high surf advisory, both until 6 a.m. Tuesday. For southern and northern Fairfield County, the NWS has issued flood and high wind watches until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Inland Fairfield County towns, such as New Canaan, Ridgefield, Danbury, Wilton and Weston, have not issued evacuation warnings, but those communities could see flooding and power outages.

An report said the storm will resemble a “large nor’easter on steroids,” with the strength of a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.
