FBI: Norwalk's Overall Crime Rate Dropped in 2010

NORWALK, Conn. – More murders occurred in Norwalk during 2010 than 2009, but violent crime overall dropped, according to statistics compiled by the FBI and recently posted on its website. Property crime went up a little more than 5 percent in 2010 from figures collected in 2009 .

In 2010, the FBI estimates 84,944 people lived in Norwalk. There were 343 violent crimes, compared with 425 violent crimes in 2009, when the FBI says 83,198 people lived here.

Specifically:

• There were six murders in 2010. There was one in 2009.

• There were 12 forcible rapes in 2010. In 2009, there were 10.

• In 2010, there were 129 robberies; in 2009, there were 157.

• Aggravated assaults in 2010 numbered 196; in 2009, there were 257.

• There were 1,878 property crimes in 2010. In 2009, there were 1,786.

• In 2010, there were 323 burglaries. In 2009, there were 314.

• Larcenies were up. In 2010, there were 1,379. In 2009, there were 1,786.

• Motor vehicle thefts were down. In 2010, there were 176. In 2009, there were 203.

• Arsons were up. In 2010 there were 12 arsons. In 2009 there were eight.
