NORWALK, Conn. Two people were pronounced dead on the scene at a motor vehicle accident on the Merritt Parkway early Saturday, according to a statement from the Norwalk Fire Department. The one-car accident happened at about 12:23 a.m. on the northbound side, just past exit 40B, off Main Avenue.
The car was traveling south on the parkway and hit a tree in the center median, Deputy Fire Chief Chris King said. Fire crews worked with Norwalk Hospital paramedics and Connecticut State Police to remove two occupants from the vehicle, using the "Jaws Of Life." Both occupants were pronounced dead on the scene. The extrication took about an hour.
The parkway's northbound lanes were closed for more than two hours and one southbound lane was closed. Both southbound lanes were shut down briefly while the vehicle was removed from the tree.
State police were investigating the cause of the accident.
The Norwalk Fire Department responded with eight pesonnel on three pieces of apparatus one engine, a rescue and a command car. The last fire unit cleared the parkway at 2:56 a.m. while the state police were still on scene; all lanes of the parkway were opened at 3:45 a.m.
