Fairfield County's Plummer Wins Oscar

WESTON, Conn. – Weston resident Christopher Plummer took home the best supporting actor honor at the 84th annual Academy Awards Sunday night.

Plummer won the Oscar for his performance as Hal Fields, a man who comes out of the closet after his wife passes away, in the Mike Mills' film, “Beginners.”

This was the 82-year-old actor’s first Oscar and during his speech he looked at his award and joked, “You’re only two years older than me, my darling. Where have you been all my life?”

Plummer also thanked the Academy, his co-stars and his fellow nominees, “I am so proud to be in your company.” Lastly, he thanked, “My long suffering wife, Elaine, who deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for coming to my rescue every day of my life.”

This was Plummer’s fourth award for his role as Fields. He won a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award and, just this weekend, an Independent Spirit Award.
