Malloy called the grants a "major step forward in ending 'range anxiety,'" according to a press release. The 56 stations will be in 42 towns across the state, including Norwalk, Greenwich, Westport and Danbury, according to the release.

The Fairfield County locations include:

  • Danbury: Western Connecticut State University
  • Greenwich: Karl Chevrolet
  • Greenwich: Town of Greenwich
  • Norwalk: Norwalk Community College
  • Norwalk: Spinnaker Real Estate Partners
  • Westport: Town of Westport
  • Westport: Tri-Town Teachers Federal Credit Union

“Our goal is a network of charging stations that allows anyone driving an electric vehicle to travel anywhere in our state with total confidence that they will be able to recharge their car battery when necessary,” said Malloy in the release. “The grants we are announcing today will bring us one step closer to that goal by adding to the nearly 100 charging stations that are already available and putting more of them at restaurants, businesses, colleges, medical centers, municipal parking facilities, and other convenient locations for the public.”

The grants total $135,946, according to the release, and funding comes from "provisions of the April 2012 settlement agreement with the state that allowed for the merger of Northeast Utilities and NStar."

“These grants will help fulfill my vision of a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy future for the families and businesses of our state,” Malloy said. “A recent federal Department of Energy study shows that it costs less than half the cost of using gasoline to operate an electric vehicle – and the availability of more charging stations helps provide a wider choice of vehicles for our residents.”

The grants range from $1,000 to $5,000, "depending on the specific requirements of each project and the technology being used," according to the release.
