Fairfield County Boy Scouts Council Will Allow Gay Members

Updated at 6:30 p.m.: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Boy Scouts of America on Thursday voted to end its longstanding policy of forbidding openly gay youths to participate in its activities. The new policy of the Connecticut Yankee Council in Fairfield County goes a step further, allowing openly gay leaders as well.

Original story: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Boy Scouts of America's Connecticut Yankee Council, which includes many towns in Fairfield County, will allow openly gay people to join, the council president said in a letter on its website

This local policy breaks with the national policy banning gay people from Boy Scouting. The Connecticut Yankee Council serves Boy Scouts in 37 towns, including Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Wilton, Danbury, Ridgefield, Redding, Fairfield, Westport, Weston and Easton.

The announcement came as Boy Scout leaders from around the country gathered for a vote Thursday in Grapevine, Texas, on a proposal that would permit openly gay youths — but not openly gay adult leaders — to participate.

But the local policy is way ahead of that, allowing both boys and adults. "Scouting in the Connecticut Yankee Council is open to all youth and adults who subscribe to the values of the Scout Oath and Law regardless of their personal sexual orientation," the letter says.

Here is the full text of the letter:

Dear Connecticut Yankee Council Scouting family,

The Boy Scouts of America, Connecticut Yankee Council is committed to providing high quality programs that deliver leadership skills, citizenship training, character development and personal fitness to young people in 37 communities in southwestern Connecticut. We are committed to our mission, we respect other's viewpoints, and we are welcoming of others.

Scouting in the Connecticut Yankee Council is open to all youth and adults who subscribe to the values of the Scout Oath and Law regardless of their personal sexual orientation. All our Scouts and leaders must display the highest levels of good conduct and any sexual conduct within Scouting is unacceptable. Our charter partners retain the responsibility to select the best possible leadership for their units consistent with their moral values.

Our Scouts and leaders repeatedly pledge to respect all people and defend the rights of others. Prejudice, intolerance and unlawful discrimination of any form are unacceptable within our membership.

By remaining true to our values, and keeping our conviction of preparing young people for life, we strive to expand our capacity to serve more youth through high quality programs.

Sincerely,
Michael Abrahamson
Council President

Blabbermouth68:

I am not adamantly opposed to allowing boys who think they may be homosexual into the Scouts. One possible positive outcome might be that associating with normal boys might influence them toward normalcy themselves. But the line must be drawn against allowing open practicing homosexuals as leaders. Predatory behavior towards boys is one of the many pathologies associated with their disorder, and normal boys must be absolutely protected from their influence and illegal appetites.

sticklerbickler:

You may or may not find this interesting.

Conclusion

The empirical research does not show that gay or bisexual men are any more likely than heterosexual men to molest children. This is not to argue that homosexual and bisexual men never molest children. But there is no scientific basis for asserting that they are more likely than heterosexual men to do so. And, as explained above, many child molesters cannot be characterized as having an adult sexual orientation at all; they are fixated on children.

Christian Mom:

What is a group if it has nothing to stand for? If you belong to the gay rights club, then you stand for gay rights, and exclude members that would be opposed to gays having rights. If you belong to the pro-choice movement, then you stand for being pro-choice, and would ban, exclude and immediately silence members that call abortion murder of a baby. Is it bigotry for these groups to exclude differing values? I think not. So why when an organization stands for godly values do you call it bigotry? Just taking pot shots at Christians again, I'd say. And you say we're the ones that do all the discriminating because we wont lie and say the Bible isn't true. God decided what is right and wrong. I am his follower. If you have an issue with Him, take it up with HIM.

sticklerbickler:

While I understand your acute view its not all about Christians and your God. The boy scouts are not a proselytizing organization. The scout handbook states that a scout is "reverent" towards others and their religious beliefs. As I'm sure you know the BSA recognizes roughly 38 different religions all of which are beholden to their own set of core values. I respect you and your God, however not everyone in the world, including scout core values, believe that their is a monolithic God for whom Jesus is their savior. I'm not saying the BSA decision is right or wrong, for that only our own God can decide.

I think its also interesting to note that this policy to allow homosexuals into scouts only extends to youths. No adults or leadership roles whom are of a homosexual orientation are allowed to participate.

Christian Mom:

Not true. Fairfield County alone is allowing openly homosexuals as leaders too. Newstimes Danbury covered this.

Blabbermouth68:

Why not transgender scoutmasters? Does this mean that bigotry would prevent Chas Bono from serving as a role model for our boys?

Christian Mom:

I think all of this "acceptance" is really just another ploy to destroy the Godly values that this great nation once stood for. Well, good job. Now we are becoming a self-serving nation that stands for nothing. And divided we fall..bravo

As for me and my house, We will continue to serve the Lord.

jlevin:

Wow. I am glad that the BSA will now shed more of its bigotry. It was only 40 years ago that the BSA ceased to permit racially segregated troops and councils. There was as much controversey then as now. So now, the BSA discriminates against only TWO classes of people: (1) adult homosexuals, and (2) ALL atheists and agnostics. It will be rather odd when a gay scout is required to leave the organization when he turns 18, no? Will we wait another 40 years for the BSA to shed its remaining bigotry?

It's interesting that the media never reports that the BSA also forbids atheists from joining. Lazy, poorly educated journalists make for a poorly informed polis.

Christian Mom:

ugh

Blabbermouth68:

This is an example of what Daniel Patrick Moynihan referred to as "Defining deviancy down". Good riddance to the Boy Scouts, if this is an insight into the courage and moral principles of its leadership.

Robby.Rob:

Please people let us not forget if you voted for the village idiot Republican war criminal Bush to apologize to a Gold star mother or Father on Memorial Day. Remember when Bush lies People DIE.

LOOK AT THIS:

Excellent point Robby excellent

Paige:

What does Bush have to do with the Boy Scouts allowing gay members?

ghost_of_a_chance:

Why must people immediately think with their crotch? I think people can participate in organizations without always thinking about sex. Don't make assumptions that every gay person is a prowler looking to prey on young children. Get out of the dark ages. And I promise that every person you meet, boy scout or not, has commited a sin along the way. I would imagine numerous sins in fact. Being gay isn't the only "sin" out there, you know. So climb down from your high horse.

Christian Mom:

Very sad day...Boy scouts are supposed to teach God's values, not the local "whoever happens to be in charge that year" person's values. I guess I will be withdrawing our boys from scouts now, if they will no longer be a "Godly" organization, but an "accepting" one. For those of you that believe you can, as the boy scout oath says, "due your duty to God" and still be "accepting" of acts that God himself calls abominations, than I can only refer you to the bible. Just to be clear here, God loves all of his children, but he does not "accept" sin as "OK". Period. Allowing Boys and LEADERS to be openly sinful is going directly against GOD and the oath of boy scouts; To "keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and MORALLY straight"

just_looking:

agreed, but our country is being destroyed from the inside.

Blabbermouth68:

The question liberals and tolerance mongers need to ask themselves is this: Would you allow your son to go on an overnight camping trip with an openly homosexual scoutmaster? If not, why not?

Ken P Jr:

Nope, same reason I wouldnt let my daughter go to a slumber party with male chaperones.

You cant have it both ways. If a persons sexual choice needs to be considered & brought up all the time we need to at least do it rationally. Why would it be any more proper for a gay man to be with a bunch of young boys in this situation than it would be for a straight man and a bunch of teenage girls?

I'm sure this will get the haters going but thats life & these are our children.

NorwalkCitizen1:

Hey blabbermouth, since when are homosexual's pedophiles?

Blabbermouth68:

Geez, Norwalk, I don't know; maybe some data on how homosexuals and their appetite for pubescent boys has virtually destroyed the Catholic priesthood; or how Gerry Sandusky did so much to improve the lot of the underprivileged boys in his care at Penn State. Read--if you have a strong stomach--homosexual pornography, and note that it is focused on BOYS, not other men. Any parent who allows a son on an overnight with a homosexual scoutmaster should be prosecuted for child endangerment.

paulinaCurlys:

Why put them into temptation?

Blabbermouth68:

Once again, "the eyes of the world are on Connecticut". Unfortunately, those eyes have tears in them.

rkrell:

Wonderful! I can finally let my sons join in good conscience!

Blabbermouth68:

Good. Wait until they come home with merit badges for flower arranging and gerbil ranching. I'm glad you can put your sons in danger and retain a "good conscience".

dawnegan:

Congratulations to CT Boy Scouts

just_looking:

yes, congratulations for abandoning thier moral compass in favor of what is popular right now.
