Dog Sniffs Out $500K In Drugs

A routine traffic stop Friday turned into a drug bust, thanks to the well-trained nose of the police department’s K9 officer, Rainor. Instead of being fined for talking on a cell phone while driving, John Herman, 44, was held on $250,000 bond after Rainor, a black German shepherd, indicated the presence of drugs.

According to Sgt. Lisa Cotto, Officer David Peterson stopped Herman, who lives on Hill Road, at 5:33 p.m. Friday on Connecticut Avenue. Peterson found about 63 pounds of high-grade marijuana and half a pound of hashish, which together have a street value of about $500,000, Cotto said. Herman was charged with possession of hallucinogens, possession of drug paraphernalia within 1,500-feet of a school, illegal possession near a school, and illegal manufacture, distribution or sale of prescribed drugs.
