NORWALK, Conn. David J. Finch, 51, a Norwalk educator and sports fanatic, died in his Norwalk home Saturday after a 15-month battle with melanoma. Finch had worked for Pepperidge Farm, Laidlaw in Wilton and New Canaan Schools but most recently was a science teacher at All Saints Catholic School in Norwalk. Finch's students knew him for his creative teaching styles and his hands-on experiments that often integrated his love of culinary creations.
One of Finch's true passions was sports. He coached, commissioned and refereed in many basketball programs, including the NAA Girls Basketball League, the GBA and St. Luke's Academy. He umpired and coached in various regional girls softball leagues and boys Little League in the past 25-plus years.
Finch is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lisa A. Mastropietro Finch; his mother, Anne C. Finch; three daughters, Erin, Kacie and Kari Finch; a son, Jesse Finch; and his grandson, Dylan Finch. He is also survived by his sister, Carol McConway, and two brothers, Donald and Fred Finch.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, 216 Scribner Ave. There are no calling hours or burial. Memorial donations may be made to All Saints Catholic School, 139 West Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT 06851.
