“The town of Darien has partially activated our Emergency Operations Center and all emergency personnel are prepared and standing ready,” First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said in a Code Red message sent to residents Monday afternoon.

Widespread and long-duration power outages are anticipated and utility crews are prohibited from working in high wind conditions, Stevenson said. Residents who experience an outage should notify Connecticut Light & Power at 800-286-2000. Residents should not call police to report an outage, and should not call 911 for routine storm questions as those lines must remain open.

“The Department of Public Works will be working around the clock to clear your roads. Blizzard conditions make that work dangerous for the plow drivers and pedestrians. Please stay away from roadways and oncoming plows,” Stevenson said.

The town is recommending that residents wait eight hours after the snow ends before shoveling sidewalks, as town and state plows will be moving snow onto the sidewalks. She also warned residents to use caution at intersections as visibility will be reduced, and not to walk in roadways while plows are clearing the streets.

“Significant accumulations can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning if boiler or generator vents become obstructed. Please clear around vents periodically during the storm,” she said.

Volunteer firefighters will be working to clear the fire hydrants. If you live near a fire hydrant, you can help firefighters by clearing it out if you’re able.

“I will communicate as needed through the storm,” Stevenson said. Residents can sign up for the Code Red alerts on the town website. “Stay home, stay safe and check in on vulnerable neighbors.”
