Darien Republicans Seek To Shuffle Selectmen

If all goes according to their plan, Jayme Stevenson, Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen will still be sitting on the Board of Selectmen after the November election, but their roles will be switched around a bit. It was announced this week that Campbell would not be seeking re-election as first selectman and that Stevenson would be seeking to take his place.

"I'm very excited about the job. I feel like I've spent a good deal of time dedicating myself to the board and understanding the needs of the town. I'm eager to serve in that capacity if the town chooses that's what it wants," Stevenson said.

The decision to swap was made among all three Republican selectmen after Campbell felt he needed to spend more time running his family's business, Ring's End Lumber. "We got together and agreed that we would love to run for another term as a team, and it just made sense for me to run in the first selectman's spot," Stevenson said.

Stevenson and Campbell tend to agree on many issues. Stevenson says there's not much she would change, besides perhaps building better communication among members of the board. There has been much dissension between the Republican and Democrat sides. "I want to improve the way we work together. It's not been through lack of trying, but I think about how much more we could have accomplished if we'd agreed to get along better."

If elected, Stevenson is hoping to continue the work that the Republicans started when they were first elected in 2009, including changing the affordable housing statute 8-30g and completing the shuffle of the Board of Education and the Senior Center.
