Crash Causes Outage in South Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. – Transformers hung overhead in a precarious position on Bouton Street Thursday afternoon after a telephone pole was cracked into more than four pieces just outside a Norwalk store. Norwalk Police arrested a man who witnesses said hit the pole with a work truck and left the scene.

A witness said the man was going to the El Mercadito Grocery, located at 33 Bouton St., at about 3:30 p.m. when his truck hit the pole, according to police. The driver told police he heard the bang but figured it wasn't much and drove away. The man was on the scene about an hour later, discussing the matter with police, who handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car.

The pole was broken in three pieces, the middle of which struck the pavement and split apart. The witness said power went out immediately. The grocery store remained open, as the merchant used a flashlight.
