Anthony and Jennifer Griek were appalled at the condition of the birds they found Sunday. "They both looked scared and were extremely hungry," Anthony Griek said of the parrots, which he assumes were pets.
The couple found the birds in River Park, which is adjacent to Costco on Connecticut Avenue, while they were on their way to Crunch Gym , across the street. One was white, and one was green. They captured the white parrot because it couldn't fly, but the green one eluded capture and was last seen in the woods of the park.
They took their rescued bird to the Connecticut Humane Society in Westport , where it has been named Orange Crunch, in honor of the location where it was found. Workers at the shelter say Orange Crunch is a ring necked parrot and that a worker there may adopt the bird. The ring necked parrot is native to India.
Anthony Griek is hoping someone will save the green parrot. He figures both birds were dumped in the parking lot at the park, but they aren't capable of surviving outside. "It's disgusting that someone would dump them like that," he said.
