Connecticut Unemployment Holds Steady At 8 Percent

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The jobless rate in Connecticut remained unchanged at 8 percent for April, even as the state added 6,300 jobs, the state Department of Labor announced last week.

Connecticut has now gained 9,600 jobs in the first four months of the year, the department said.

“Though our monthly data can be volatile, Connecticut’s job growth tempo picked up considerably last month,” said Andy Condon, director of the office of research for the labor department.

“The state appears to be experiencing a solid and more typical spring seasonal job buildup. Seven of 10 major industry supersectors participated in job gains in April. Annualized job growth is now back above 10,000."

Connecticut has recovered 57,500 positions or 47.4 percent of the 121,200 jobs that were lost in the state in the March 2008 to February 2010 employment recession. The jobs recovery is now 38 months under way.

In April, Connecticut reached a new peak in the total job base, at 1,649,300.

The unemployment rate a year ago in Connecticut was 8.2 percent. The national unemployment rate in April was 7.5 percent.

The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Labor Market Area added 4,200 jobs. The Danbury area lost 300 jobs.
