NORWALK, Conn. – Power to flooded neighborhoods in South Norwalk and Rowayton will be cut by Connecticut Light & Power and South Norwalk Electric and Water, Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia announced Monday afternoon.

The move is designed to protect the electrical infrastructure in addition to preventing electrocutions and fires.

The utilities began cutting power at about 3 p.m. Monday and will continue cutting service until 5 p.m. Among the areas that will experience power shutdowns include streets south of McKinley Street in Rowayton as well as streets south of Route 136 in South Norwalk. Additional areas in the city may be affected, too.

Moccia issued Code Red warning calls to residents of those areas Monday afternoon to notify them that they would lose power and could be without power for 30 hours or longer.

“Restoration times cannot be estimated at this time, but it is anticipated you will be without power for at least 30 hours,” Moccia said in the Code Red statement. “Residents should be aware they will lose power to all electric service, including sump pumps, phones and refrigeration.”
